Ancient Dome formed in Saronno (Lombardy) in 2000, founded by Paolo “Paul” Porro, Matteo “Cuzzo” Cuzzolin, and Gabriele “Pech” Borghi, with Salvatore “Syra” Siragusano joining shortly after on drums. Their sound evolved from classic heavy metal roots into a melodic yet aggressive thrash metal, openly inspired by the Bay Area scene and influenced by bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, Heathen, Exodus, Overkill, and Slayer. After a few demos and an EP, they released their debut Human Key in 2009 on Punishment 18 Records, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Davide Colombo at Diana Studio. Despite its raw production, the album was praised for its intensity. This was followed by Perception of This World (2010) and Cosmic Gateway to Infinity (2014), along with other EPs, splits, and compilations, until their disbandment in 2019.
Why re-record Human Key? It’s a universally acknowledged truth: nobody likes the 2.0 version of an album — the original is always the best. It’s not about sound quality, improved arrangements, or greater technical skill, but about the emotional bond with its primitive nature. And every member of Ancient Dome has repeated this truth more than once (don’t believe them if they say otherwise… liars [cit.]).
In 2019, the band was still active and, since many of us — even those not around in 2009 — still felt a strong attachment to that first record, we decided to re-record it to celebrate its tenth anniversary, have fun, and keep the engine running while waiting for a new full-length. But then, in October of that year, everything came to a halt. Unexpected events, some call it “life”, disrupted everyone’s balance. The result? The tracks were fully recorded but remained in a drawer for years, never mixed or mastered.
In September 2024, former singer Jerry sent a simple message: “The songs are ready, are you still interested?” And here we are, celebrating the fifteenth (or sixteenth…) anniversary of an album we still love and listen to. We hope you can enjoy this final chapter of an adventure that lasted almost twenty years, which — though now concluded — was essential and vital for all who were part of it.
